Sugar Mill

Founded in 1881 by Baron Estevão Ribeiro de Rezende to replace slave work by mechanization and hired man power. There were serious difficulties to maintain the imported machines in operation. In 1899 it was sold to Societè Sucrérie Brèsiliennes, a French group which ran six other sugar mills in the state of São Paulo. At the time the Engenho Central became one of the most important sugar mills in the country, with an annual production of 100 thousand sugar bags and 3 million liters of alcohol. The sugar and alcohol production was discontinued in 1974 and the building considered a historic patrimony. The 12 thousand square meters of buildings surrounded by S80 thousand square meters of green area are now an important cultural, artistic and recreational site of the city.
